Suzie van der Walt - a Lupus Story:
Suzie was diagnosed with SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosis) in March 2005, and officially confirmed with having this delibedating chronic auto immune disease by Dr Maldonado, a Lupus Specialist in Miami Florida, in September 2011.
Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that damages and destroys any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body).
In lupus, the immune system becomes corrupt, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu). Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body€™s healthy tissues. Lupus patients experience extreme pain during the destruction process caused by the corrupt immune system, and this finally leads to death.
When Suzie was diagnosed, she started and managed the first support organisation for Lupus in South Africa. Counselling, advising and financially supporting (where it was possible) in excess of 280 thousand South African Lupus sufferers with a small crew she managed to lead and guide.
In 2009 Suzie followed the trials of a new medication (called Benlysta) developed for Lupus patients - the 1st medication developed in 50 years specifically for the treatment of Lupus. Suzie was able to travel to Miami, USA to obtain the treatment where the Benlysta medication gave her 90% of her health and normal lifestyle back. During this time Suzie fought for South African Lupus patients to obtain the medication by lobbying with the Medical Control Counsel. But all efforts were in vain, as the authorities focus was primarily on Aids and HIV patient sufferers.
Unfortunately Suzie could no longer afford the expensive importing of Benlysta and had to stop using the medication in 2015. She became too ill to work and was forced to close her business.
At this point in time Suzie has become so ill that she is bedridden and often needs to be resuscitated, as she stops breathing from time to time.
The only solution now is for Suzie to relocate to Miami, Florida with her family where she is able to obtain the medication and treatment in order to save her life.
Our plea is to request your financial support whereby an initial USD $ 16500 is required to cover all relocation expenses to the USA in order to save Suzie€™s life.
Please help Suzie become well again. She can then once again focus on becoming an activist for other Lupus suffers.
